Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation (BSKF) has called for reducing working hours and prices of essential commodities during the holy month of Ramadan, considering the interests of the workers and low income people.
The organisation made the demand in a statement signed by its acting president Prof Harunur Rashid Khan and general secretary Advocate Atiqur Rahman.
Like other time of the year, the workers in the formal and informal sectors used to work for hours (from 8 to 12 hours including overtime) during the month of Ramadan. Due to the reason, the workers could not offer prayers and carry out other religious activities properly during Ramadan, the statement said.
They called upon the government and the factory owners to help reduce working hours so that the workers could 'devote themselves to the path of Almighty' during the fasting month.
They also urged the government to rein in the spiralling prices of essential commodities for the interests of limited income group of people including workers during Ramadan.
BSKF leaders demanded the government take a move to introduce a special rationing system for the workers who had lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
They also called for the immediate release of the organisation's central president ANM Shamsul Islam.
