Religion should not be a weapon of grabbing political power: Hanif

Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said on Saturday religion should not be used as a weapon of grabbing political power, reports BSS.
"Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had never used the religion Islam in occupying power. But Jamaat-e-Islami is doing politics in the country using the name of Islam," he said while addressing a function on the second consecutive day of the 5-day refreshers' training course at Islamic Foundation here.
Islamic Foundation (IF) arranged the training programme for Imams, said a press release here.
IF Director General Shamim Mohammad Afjal presided over the function, the release added.
The country is moving towards progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Hanif said, adding that the premier has worked most for the wellbeing of Ulemas.
Although BNP was in the state power from 2001 to 2006, they would not be able to show any instance that they did something for Islam during their tenures, he said, adding, "But Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the Islamic Foundation. He allotted site for Kakrail mosque".
He also called upon the ulemas to come forward to ensure welfare for the country.
