Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called upon the countrymen on Monday to remain calm to bring back normalcy and peace in the country.

"I call upon the countrymen to remain calm, so that peace and normalcy be returned to the country," he made the appeal through media to the countrymen after meeting Chief of General Staff of Bangladesh Army General Waker-Uz-Zaman at Dhaka Cantonment in the capital.

Mirza Fakhrul expressed deep sorrow over the losses of so many lives, and said the sacrifice of those killed in the movement would be written in golden letters in the country's history. He conveyed his profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.

The BNP secretary general also promised that the trial of those, who killed the students, innocent people and children during the non-cooperation and anti-discrimination movement, would be held in the country.

He wished early recovery of those who were wounded during the movement.

Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul repeatedly called upon Sheikh Hasina (former prime minister) to resign following the demands made by the anti-discrimination students' movement and opposition political parties to avoid further losses of lives and properties in the country.
