Repeated calls for dialogue not a weakness, says BNP

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir warned Saturday that it will be a mistake for the government if it thinks that their repeated calls for dialogue as their weakness, reports UNB.

"Dialogue is the language of democracy. There's no room for violence in democratic practice. That's why we're repeatedly calling upon the government to engage in dialogue to resolve the ongoing political crisis in a peaceful manner. But there's no reason to treat it as our weakness," he said.

Mirza Fakhrul came up with the remarks while inaugurating the ninth political workshop of BNP at a city hotel.

Terming BNP a liberal democratic party, he said they will realise their demand for holding a fresh election under a nonparty administration through a peaceful democratic movement.

He condemned the Prime Minister's (PM) remark about BNP's movement and dialogue offer, saying the arrogant comment the PM made at a press conference is not acceptable to people as it cannot be the language of a PM.

Accusing the government of pushing the country into a deep crisis by holding a lopsided election on January 5, Mirza Fakhrul said the government is not sincere to overcome the current crisis as it cannot understand people's pulse and the gravity of the problem.  "The government has imposed a one-party rule on the country's people by dashing their all hopes and inspirations. Awami League (AL) doesn't believe in democracy. It talks about democracy but establishes autocratic and fascist rule whenever it comes to power.

Claiming their pre-January 5 election movement was cent per cent successful, he said, "We had mainly wanted people to boycott the polls and they did it. Even five percent people didn't participate in the election. So, there's no reason to be complacent for the ruling quarter that our pre-election movement had failed."

Mirza Fakhrul alleged that the government has destroyed democracy by snatching people's all the basic rights. "It's now our national duty to forge a national consensus to force this regime to hold a fresh election under a non-party administration."

He asked the BNP leaders and activists to get ready for making the supreme sacrifice to save the country and its people by waging a strong movement against the current repressive regime.

Meanwhile taking a swipe at the Prime Minister (PM) for her comment that Khaleda Zia is losing ground with her frequent movement threats, BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Saturday Sheikh Hasina is living in the house of cards which may collapse anytime.

"You (PM) please look at yourself and think about your own fate. You're living in the house of cards which has no base… people have abandoned you," he said.
