RAJSHAHI, Dec 3 (UNB): Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) was declared closed Wednesday for an indefinite period as violent clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists left six critically wounded.
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the academic council of the college in the morning and the students were asked to vacate their dormitories by 4.00 pm.
Campus sources said the trouble began when some "cadres" of Shibir attacked the BCL activists in a feud for establishing supremacy over a hostel of the medical college.
Afterwards, the two groups locked in a series of clashes, chasing each other. The campus rioting left six BCL supporters critically injured.
Following the clashes, the college academic council sat for the urgent meeting and decided to close the college sine die to avert further troubles.
Additional police forces were deployed on the college campus as tensions mounted there and spilled over into nearby areas of the city.
