RU marks historic Plassey Day with silent rally

Rajshahi University (RU) on Tuesday observed the historic Battle of Plassey Day with a silent rally to commemorate the event and highlight its significance in the country's history. The programme was organised by the Centre for Heritage Studies (CHS).
The rally began at 11:00 am from Joha Square on the university campus and marched silently through different roads before concluding with a gathering in front of the Senate Building.
Prof Dr Iftikharul Alam Masud, Executive Director of CHS and Registrar of the university, said Plassey serves as a mirror through which friends and foes can be identified.
He said that following the Battle of Plassey, collaborators of colonial powers had plundered the region's resources, and alleged that modern-day beneficiaries of authoritarian tendencies had similarly exploited national resources over the past one and a half decades.
Emphasising the need for national unity inspired by the lessons of Plassey, he urged citizens to contribute to safeguarding the country and building a prosperous future.
Among others, Dr Md Nur Hossain, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mathematics; Md Tanvir Hossain, Lecturer of the Department of Social Work; poet Moshtaq Ahmed; freedom fighter Mahmud Jamal Kaderi; and writer-researcher Mahbub Siddiqui attended the programme.
