RU Shibir men lay siege to Zia Hall

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, AUG 08: Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres laid siege to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, and confined the provost, some 40 Chhatra League activists and general students for four hours on Wednesday.
Prof Rezaul Karim, provost of the hall, said on Wednesday the authority allocated some 99 vacant seats among students based on their merits and good academic results.
Protesting the decision the Shibir men threatened him and created anarchy on the campus, he added.
Witnesses said over a hundred Shibir men and outsiders led by its hall unit president Mainul Islam and general secretary Mostafizur Rahman and Nawab Abdul Latif Hall unit president Masud went to the hall at around 10:00am and demanded cancellation of the allocation.
Later, two Shibir leaders were caught with arms in a police raid at the hall in the afternoon, but they were released at night after they signed undertakings.
At one stage of the commotion on the day, some 25 BCL activists went to the scene and took the side of the authority that sparked tension on the campus.
