Ruling alliance lawyers split over conflict of interest

November 25, 2012 00:00:00

At long last, Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (SASP), a federating body of five different lawyers' associations loyal to the Awami League-led grand alliance, on Saturday officially split up amid internal conflict of interests defying the leadership of Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, reports UNB.
The dissident group at a meeting held at an open space in front of the Attorney General's office announced their new convening committee with former SCBA president Abdul Baset Majumder as its convener.
Incumbent SASP convener Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam at a separate meeting at the SCBA auditorium announced a 101-member council preparatory committee with Post and Telecommunications Minister advocate Sahara Khatun as its convener.
The meeting decided to present a full-fledged SASP committee within five months.
The feuding SASP lawyers represent Bangabandhu Ainjibi Parishad, Awami Ainjibi Parishad, Ganatantrik Ainjibi Samity, Jatiya Ainjibni Parishad and Jatiya Ainjibi Federation.
The conflict of interest over SASP leadership developed after its formation in 2004 over appointments of government law officers, public prosecutors, government pleaders, legal consultants to different government organisations, including banks, judges in the higher court, nominations in the elections to the Bar Council and Bar Associations, a senior SASP lawyer told the news agency requesting anonymity.
