Ministers and professionals at a human chain programme Thursday vowed to resist violence during hartals and blockade, being enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, in a bid to safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty.
They said the BNP along with its allies has been waging an undeclared war against the country's independence, sovereignty and democracy in the name of hartals and blockade.
Sramik-Karmachari-Peshajibi-Muktijoddha Samannay Parishad (SKPMSP) organised the programme in front of Osmani Memorial Hall.
Two ministers and three state ministers along with employees of different sectors joined the programme from 12:45 pm to 1:00 pm. They also played flutes for one minute from 1:00 pm.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, State Minister for Science and Technology Yafes Osman, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki, chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (passenger transport) Mahbubuddin Ahmed, member secretary of SKPMSP Md Abdul Malek Mia and leaders of garment and transport sectors were, among others, present.
The information minister called upon all to get united against ongoing violence unleashed by the BNP.
The shipping minister, also convener of SKPMSP, said the violent activities in the name of hartals and blockade by BNP-Jamaat-led 20-party alliance is nothing, but to destroy our independence.
He said the alliance had killed 21 drivers and over one hundred people by hurling petrol bombs at buses and trucks since January 6.
"They are now united to take revenge on people for their defeat during the war of liberation in 1971. They are hatching conspiracies to destroy the country's economy and students' future," he said.
Mr Khan called upon the alliance to shun the path of destructive politics. "Political unrest along with violence has worsened the situation of the country."
He urged the people to resist terrorist acts, hold rallies and meetings against violence and stay alert on the streets alongside the law enforcement agencies to keep vehicular movement smooth.
Drivers of all modes of vehicles, including buses and trains honked horns for one minute from 1:00 pm on the day in protest against violence and killing of innocent people.
Mr Khan called upon all to join the national convention slated for tomorrow (Saturday) at Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA). The next course of action programme will be announced at the programme.
