Satkhira Jamaat chief arrested

SATKHIRA, June 16 (UNB): Police arrested the district Jamaat Ameer and former lawmaker Maulana Abdul Khalek Mandol alias Kosai Khalek with a foreign pistol and bullets from a secret meeting at a madrasa in Sadar upazila early Tuesday.

Sub-inspector (SI) of DB Kamal Hossain, spokesman of the district police, said on a tip-off, a team of police raided Khalilnagar Madrasa while a group of Jamaat leaders and activists, including Khalek, were holding a secret meeting there at about 5:30 am.

Later, sensing the presence of police, Jamaat activists blasted a few hand bombs and fled the scene.

But police managed to arrest Khalek with the firearms.

The release said Khalek was arrested on February 8 last on charge of carrying out subversive activities.
