The Supreme Court (SC) Thursday granted government's application for leave-to-appeal seeking to overturn the High Court (HC) ruling on stringent Emergency Powers Rules (EPR), 2007.
The HC, after inviting a legal debate over the dilemma following revocation of its right, on April 22 ruled that it had the jurisdiction to dispose of petitions seeking bail by any person facing criminal case under the emergency rules, reports UNB.
The EPR had revoked the right to bail of those being herded up during the current countrywide operation against crime and corruption.
Granting the application for final hearing of the appeal, a six-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice M Ruhul Amin, asked the government to file a regular leave-to-appeal in three weeks.
The HC ruling has become inoperative as the SC earlier ordered a stay on it following the government's application.
