SC instantly stays HC order on Sayeedee travel ban

August 13, 2009 00:00:00

Hours after the High Court Wednesday directed the government to allow ex-lawmaker Delwar Hossain Sayeedee to go abroad, the Supreme Court stayed operation of the HC order as the attorney general said he is a "war-crime suspect", reports UNB.
Passing the interim order following a petition moved by the Attorney General, Mahbubey Alam, the chamber court of Justice M Muzammel Hossain, fixed August 18 for hearing of the government petition for stay.
The government hurriedly moved the petition, as it prefers leave to appeal against the High Court judgment and orders, court sources said.
Earlier in the day, a bench comprising Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Borhan Uddin upon a writ petition declared "illegal" and "without lawful authority" the government action that prevented Sayeedee from flying to Saudi Arabia on July 24.
Another report from Pirojpur adds: Delwar Hossain Sayeedee and four others were sued Wednesday for the killing of a freedom fighter during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Manik Poshari of Chitlima village under Zianagar Upazila filed the case with Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court against Saydee and his accomplices named Hakim Gazi, Mohsin, Sobhan Hawlader and Momin Hawlader of Gazipur village in Sadar Upazila.
