The Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court (SC) ordered on Monday publisher as well as editor of vernacular daily Janakantha Atikullah Khan Masud and its executive editor Shawdesh Roy to appear before it on August 9 and explain why punitive actions will not be taken against them for contempt of court proceedings, reports UNB.
A four-member bench of the AD, led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, issued the order after hearing a time petition filed by the two who appeared before the bench around 9:00 am on Monday in response to a rule issued against them earlier.
Three other members of the bench are Justice Nazmul Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmood Hossain and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique.
Advocate Salauddin Dolon, lawyer of the accused, told reporters after the hearing that in response to their three-month time petition, the court allowed time till August 9 for hearing the explanation.
Earlier on July 29, the AD issued a contempt rule against the two for publishing a news item tarnishing the court's image.
The court issued the rule as an article, published in the Bangla daily on July 16, tarnished the image of the court and questioned magistracy of the judiciary, said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
