The Supreme Court (SC) Thursday overruled the High Court (HC) verdicts that acquitted former state minister Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin and his son Mir Helaluddin of graft charges, reports UNB.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain, came up with the order after hearing two leave-top-appeal petitions filed by the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC).
The SC also asked the HC to hear again their petitions filed against the lower court order.
On July 4, 2007, a trial court sentenced Mir Nasiruddin to 13 years' imprisonment and Mir Helaluddin to three years' one for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information about assets.
Following separate petitions, the HC scrapped the sentence of Helaluddin on August 4, 2010 while that of Nasiruddin on August 10, 2010.
Later, the ACC moved the SC against the HC verdicts.
ACC lawyer MA Aziz Khan said it would be clear after the releases of the full text of the SC order whether Nasiruddin and his son will remain in bail.
