The Supreme Court (SC) Sunday turned down government plea for leave to appeal against High Court (HC) orders that had discharged two corruption cases against detained Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, reports UNB.
After hearing both sides, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice M Ruhul Amin passed the order rejecting the government's leave-to-appeal petition.
The now-defunct Bureau of Anti-corruption filed the cases against CCC mayor and its chief engineer for construction of a market at Agrabad and inter-city bus terminal at Nasirabad in the port city in July 2002, said the counsel for Chowdhury.
In February 2005, the HC, following petitions filed by the accused, discharged both the cases.
The mayor, arrested on March 7 under the ongoing purge against high-profile corruption suspects, is now facing at least a dozen of corruption cases.
