The Supreme Court upheld on Thursday the High Court (HC) judgment that had declared 5.0 per cent mandatory quota for the offspring of freedom fighters in MBBS admission every year to medical colleges as prescribed by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, reports UNB.
A four-member Appellate Division Bench of the Supreme Court (SC), headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order, dismissing the application for a leave-to-appeal filed by the government against the HC judgment of March 6 last year.
With the day's apex court judgment, the existing stay on the operation of the HC judgment stands vacated, said the SC order.
Liberation War hero Delwar Hossain, a deprived father, filed the writ petition in the form of public interest litigation (PIL) as the medical colleges did not duly comply with the circular of the ministry.
