The Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court (SC) waived on Tuesday the fine imposed by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 upon Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra, as he sought unconditional apology for his acts, reports BSS.
The SC disposed of the matter with a caution to the two-time contemnor. The four-member AD panel led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order acting on an appeal filed by the veteran freedom fighter, challenging the order of the ICT-2.
The second tribunal on June 10 sentenced Dr Zafrullah to a simple imprisonment for one hour and fined him Tk 5,000. In default of which, he has to suffer one month imprisonment, for committing contempt of court.
The contemnor served the sentence of imprisonment on that day but filed an appeal against the order of fine on June 16. AD Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique on that day stayed the order and sent it to the full bench for further hearing.
Senior advocate Abdur Rezak Khan and Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun on Monday took part in the hearing for Zafrullah, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved for the state.
"He has sought unconditional apology. The court cautioned him and waived the fine imposed upon him," the attorney general said to journalists outside the courtroom.
