March 30, 2011 00:00:00

The staggered annual election to the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) begins today (Wednesday) at its auditorium, reports UNB. The two-day election starts at 10:00 am and will continue until 5:00 pm with an hour's break from 1 pm everyday, according to the SCBA election conducting committee. A total of 2,317 voters will cast their votes to elect the 14-member new executive committee of the SCBA for 2011-12. Practically, two panels - Sammilita Ainjibi Samannoy Parisad (SASP) backed by the Awami League-led grand alliance and Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (JAF) backed by the BNP-Jama'at alliance - are in the election race. Another panel floated by BNP stalwart (ousted) Barrister Nazmul Huda under the banner of Independent Lawyers' Forum (ILF) is also contesting the election partially. The newly-floated ILF, also supporter of BNP, may make the election a "hurdle race" for JAF, said some lawyers without political affiliation. Former SCBA president Abdul Baset Majumder and incumbent SCBA president Khondker Mahbub Hossain are vying for the post of president from the SASP and JAF respectively. Other candidates: SASP panel - vice presidents KM Saifuddin Ahmed and AKM Jaglul Haider Afrik, secretary SM Abul Hossain, treasurer Jesmin Sultana, assistant secretaries SM Masud Hosein Dolon and SM Zahurul Islam, members Jesmin Akhtar Keya, M Abdus Sattar Siddiquee, M Anwar Hossain (Reza), M Bahar Uddin Al Razi, Sanchita Saha, Shovana Banu and Swapan Kumar Dutta. JAF panel - vice presidents M Asad Ullah and M Ibrahim Molla, secretary M Bodroddoza Badal, treasurer Fahima Nasrin Munni, assistant secretaries AHM Kamruzzaman Mamun and Golam Noor Tarun, members ASM Moktar Kabir Khan.
