Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, said Wednesday "Securing democracy, independence is a long, arduous struggle," reports BSS

Expressing deep sympathy to the family of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, a political colleague, who was martyred in the battle against autocracy 25 years ago, the minister said the fact remains that democracy for which he sacrificed his life is still not secured.

The minister was speaking at a gathering at Taher auditorium to mark the 24th death anniversary of the doctor, whose martyrdom on November 27, 1990, led to the fall of autocracy soon after.

Inu told the gathering, organised by his party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), that whatever is said by the intellectuals and other critics, the fact remains that securing democracy or independence remains a tough task.

Drawing a comparison with neighboring India, the information minister, also president of JSD, said that even after 67 years of independence the state has failed to provide security to all of its citizens.

He said 42 years after independence the state of Bangladesh is facing challenges from militants, terrorists, fundamentalists and communal forces. " BNP and Khaleda Zia are principal patrons of these, "he told the meeting.

"If we can get rid of her, we will have our freedom secured a little more, "he said.

The minister reminded all that it may not be possible to work according to desired patterns always, but the urge and objective for a better polity and society must be there.

"Without ideals no healthy nation or society can be built," he said.

The meeting was addressed, among others, by Prof Dr MA Karim, former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, Prof Dr Moazzem Hossain, former treasurer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), JASHOD leader Md Khaled, Labour Leader Naimul Ahsan Jewel and Jatiya Nari Jote Convenor Afroza Huq Rina.

The programme was conducted by Karim Sikder, central leader of JASHOD.
