Security tightened in Ctg over Pahela Baishakh

Celebrations must end by 6:00pm: CMP

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 09: The law enforcing agencies particularly Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) have taken stringent security measures ahead of the Pahela Baishak.

The CMP has issued a directive urging the city people to end all the festivities on the occasion of the Bangla New Year by 6pm.

Sources said the police authorities have issued 11 directives in maintaining law and order in the metropolis on that day.

Among the directives was one that traditional masks cannot be used during Mongol Shovajatra (procession of good wishes).

The CMP has also restricted plying of vehicles in DC Hill area, on Jamal Khan Road, Momin Road, Buddhist Tample Road, in Nandan Kanon, Enayet Bazar, CRB Shirish Tola, Kazir Dewri, Stadium, Tigerpass Bypass and Patenga sea beach areas and from Katghor to Sea Beach, Airport to Sea Beach and on the Golden Beach Road from 6 am to 6 pm.

The decisions came from a coordination meeting of the CMP on law and order held in the afternoon, with its Commissioner Md Mahabubur Rahman presiding.

Among others, CMP additional commissioners Amena Begum and Kushum Dewan, deputy commissioner Shyamol Kumar and representatives of the Pahela Baishakh Ujjapon Parishad in Chattogram were present at the meeting.

Additional Commissioner Amena Begum said, "CMP will arrange a four-tier security for the Pahela Baishakh celebration. Already 3,000 policemen have been deployed in different places of the city."

"Police have taken special measures for maintaining the law and order. CMP will stop movement of vehicles in DC Hill area and on the adjoining roads and in Patenga sea beach and adjoining areas from 6 am to 6 pm to ensure smooth celebration of Pahela Baishakh" she said, adding police will stay equipped to fend off any unwanted incident and anarchy in the city.

As per directives of the higher authority, CMP and other agencies have taken special measures in this regard.

"The CMP has deployed an additional number of police members in the vulnerable areas. We have already intensified patrol in the city areas. We are conducting raids on the suspected places where anarchists may be hiding in Chittagong," she added.
