CHITTAGONG, Apr 13 (UNB): The police detained seven members of a Pakistan-based Islamic organisation from the city's Patharghat area Monday suspecting their involvement in militant acts.
Acting on a tip-off, the Kotwali police raided a house at Naju Mia Lane at 12 noon and picked up the seven members of Dawati Islami, Bangladesh along with a huge number of Islamic CDs, VCDs and books.
The police also seized nine passports and some receipt books used for collecting money.
The detainees are Mahmood Attari, Bashar Attari, Kalimullah Attari, Nurul Azim Attari, Mozammel Attari, Faruque Quaderi and Sohel Tauhidi.
Later, they were taken to the police station for questioning.
Deputy Commissioner (North) Banajkumar Majumder told newsmen that they detained the seven people for questioning to know whether they had any link with militancy.
The suspects were learned to have said that they had organisational activities of Dawati Islami, Bangladesh in 22 districts of Bangladesh and claimed that they did not believe in militancy and their activities were on mosque- based.
They said they go to different mosques and invite people towards Islam and preach the messages of Islam.
Earlier in 2006, the police arrested nine members of Dawati Islami, Bangladesh in Jhalakathi but released them later as no link to militancy was found at that time.
