Rajshahi University (RU) has observed the martyrdom anniversary of Dr. Shamsuzzoha, the country's first martyred intellectual, along with Teachers' Day, through various programmes.
On Wednesday, the university administration, teachers, students, officers and staff members observed the day with due respect.
At 9:00 am, under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib, senior university officials paid tributes to Shaheed Dr. Shamsuzzoha by placing wreaths at his grave, and at the Shamsuzzoha Memorial Plaque located at the main gate of the university, observing a one-minute silence in his honour.
Later, different departments, residential halls, the RU Progressive Teachers' Association, professional bodies, and various political, social, and voluntary organisations paid homage by placing wreaths.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib said, 'As every year, we have laid floral wreaths in memory of Shaheed Dr. Shamsuzzoha on Teachers' Day. Rallies were held from different halls and the Department of Chemistry. Today, our university alone is observing this day."
He further said, "We want all universities and educational institutions across the country to observe this day with due importance and dignity. We believe the government will pay greater attention to ensuring that the day is commemorated nationwide."
Among others, the programme was attended by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr. Md. Main Uddin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof Md. Farid Uddin Khan, Treasurer Md. Matiar Rahman, and Proctor Dr. Mahbubur Rahman.
It is worth noting that on February 18, 1969, Dr. Shamsuzzoha, an associate professor of Chemistry and then proctor of the university, was martyred after being shot by the Pakistani occupying forces. In his memory, the university administration observes the day every year as Teachers' Day.
