Shahjahan Omar faces fury of pro-BNP lawyers at SC

FE REPORT | December 07, 2023 00:00:00

Barrister Shahjahan Omar, who recently jumped ship and joined the ruling camp, faced verbal sparring from pro-BNP lawyers at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) building on Wednesday.

The sacked BNP vice-chairman has stood for parliament on the Awami League ticket from Jhalkathi-01 constituency.

The incident took place 12:30 pm. At one stage of the altercation, Supreme Court lawyer Omar left the association building in the face of strong objections from pro-BNP lawyers.

Sources said Mr Omar came to the SCBA building and called lawyer Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, general secretary of the Supreme Court unit of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, a platform of pro-BNP lawyers.

However, Mr Sajal did not go to Mr Omar's room. Then Mr Omar himself went to the room of Mr Sajal. He was then accompanied by some law-enforcers.

Entering the room, Mr Omar wanted to know as to why he was scolded and his posters were torn? Then Mr Sajal taunted, saying he had no right to have any picture with Khaleda Zia.

The two lawyers became embroiled in an altercation centring on the issue. Then some pro-BNP lawyers gathered in front of the room. At one stage, Mr Omar left the room.

Referring to Mr Omar, pro-BNP lawyer Mahbubur Rahman said an accused in a case for attacking the residence of the Chief Justice (CJ) was roaming with police protection.

Earlier in the day, Mr Omar sought to meet Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan at the SC but returned without meeting the CJ who was busy with court functions.

On November 30, BNP expelled Mr Omar for violating party discipline by opting to contest the polls on the Awami League ticket.
