Shibir-police clash in Rajshahi, 10 hurt

RAJSHAHI, Sept 20 (Agencies): At least 10 people, including two police constables, were injured when the supporters and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student-wing Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with police in the Rajarhata area under Boalia Police Station in the city today.

Abdus Sobhan, Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Police Station, said the incident happened around 8.30 am in front of the Rajarhata Loknath School.

He said Jamaat and Shibir supporters took out a procession from the Sonadighi Moni Chattar area demanding acquittal of their senior leader and war crimes convict Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

The protesters were holding a rally in front of the Loknath School. The clash erupted when the Jamaat supporters started to hurl stones at the police. Police opened blank-fire and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

Five activists of the party's student front were arrested, said police.

OC Sobhan said two police constables were hurt during the clash.

Police arrested Pabna district publicity secretary of Jamaat is Islami Moulana Abdur  Rouf from his residence at Atua mohallah in the district town early Saturday.

Officer-in-charge of Pabna police station Kazi Haniful Islam said a team of police conducted a raid in the house of Abdur Rouf at around 1.00am and arrested him in connection of violence on September 17 in the town.

He was sent to jail, OC said.
