CHITTAGONG, April 13 (BSS): Returning Officer (RO) of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls Abdul Baten said on Monday the present situation of Chittagong city does not require deployment of Army ahead of the city polls.
The RO, however, directed the police to strengthen drives for arresting the listed criminals and recovery of illegal arms to hold the polls in a free and fair manner.
"The situation to deploy army has not so far emerged here. Steps would be taken according to the reports of the intelligence agencies considering the afterward situations", the RO said adding that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) would take decision in this regard after the meeting of law and discipline committee on Aril 19.
The RO said this while talking to journalists after a meeting of the coordination cell of law enforcement agencies at his conference room at 12:00 noon.
Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting, the RO said the law enforcement and intelligence agencies have been asked to ensure that the listed criminals, outside goons and miscreants cannot enter the city.
"They (law enforcement and intelligence agencies) have given us word that they would abide by the legal directives of the RO and would do everything to hold the election in a fair, free and transparent manner", Baten added.
