THAKURGAON, July 28, 2026 (BSS): LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for a strong social movement against drug abuse, saying the active participation of people from all walks of life is essential to protect the younger generation.
"Eradicating drugs from society is not possible through law enforcement and punitive measures alone. Active public participation in a broad-based social movement against drugs is essential," he said.
The minister made the remarks while briefing journalists after an anti-drug awareness meeting held at the Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner's conference room on Tuesday afternoon.
Mirza Fakhrul, who also serves as the BNP secretary general, said the government has intensified its anti-drug initiatives with the aim of building a strong public movement to make the campaign more effective.
"The coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies, families, educational institutions, social and cultural organisations, and the mass media are crucial to eliminating drug abuse from society," he said.
Emphasising the need for extensive public awareness campaigns, the minister said educating people at every level of society about the dangers of drug abuse would help protect the younger generation from its harmful effects.
"Through such collective efforts, it is possible to build a healthy, safe, and drug-free society," he added.
He also urged the relevant organisations and media professionals to play a more proactive role in raising public awareness about the devastating consequences of drug abuse.
