Speaker urges MPs to keep parliament effective

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr  Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury Tuesday urged the MPs to work to keep parliament effective and fulfill pledges to the people, reports BSS.

"Parliament is centre of all activities. All would have to work to keep it functional, she said speaking as the chief guest at an orientation programme for newly election members of the 10th parliament at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The two-day orientation aims at informing the first-time MPs about the constitution, rules of procedures of parliament, activities of parliamentary standing committees and parliamentary norms, said an official release.

The speaker said every minute of a parliament session is important and it is essential for an MP to take part and witness all activities in the session.

Parliament is the symbol of people's expectation, she said and urged the lawmaker to discharge their duties properly.

Deputy Speaker M Fazle Rabbi Mian and Chief Whip ASM Firoz also spoke on the occasion. Whips M Shahiduzzaman Sarkar and M Shahab Uddin were present, among others.

Fifty newly elected MPs are taking part in the orientation.
