Speakers at a discussion have remembered former president and BNP founder Major Ziaur Rahman's contributions in various sectors and praised his leadership in the nation building, reports UNB.
The discussion was held at the National Press Club in the city, organised by the Nurses Association of Bangladesh (NAB), marking the National Revolution and Solidarity Day on Sunday.
Dr. A Z M Zahid Hossain, a member of BNP standing committee who was the chief guest at the event, spoke about the legacy of former president Ziaur Rahman and the nation's struggles for independence.
In his speech, Dr. Zahid said how the events of the past shaped the course of the country. "Many have spoken about the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, but we must remember that today's weather determines tomorrow's sunrise," he said.
"If we deny 1947, there will be no 1952. Without 1952, there will be no 1962, and without 1962, there will be no mass uprising in 1969. Without the uprising of 1969, there would have been no Liberation War in 1971, and no anti-autocracy movements of 1990. Major Ziaur Rahman fought with arms. He did not surrender. He guided the nation and declared independence both in Bengali and English. The people of Bangladesh depended on Ziaur Rahman, a country that had seen famine but later became an exporter of rice," he said.
He also praised Major Zia's leadership in advancing the nation, citing his contributions to various sectors, including education ,women's development, and youth involvement in nation building.
"He led with great foresight, from establishing Nursing Institutes in every district to promoting the Ekushey Padak and taking significant steps to support the country's development," Dr. Hossain added.
Jahanara Khatun, president of NAB, said, "I have always been a supporter of President Ziaur Rahman. He established Nursing Institutes in almost every district and introduced the Nursing Gold Medal which unfortunately has been discontinued.
We express the hope the Nursing Institutes can work together for the betterment of the country."
