Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina said spending on education is a great investment to make the country free from poverty, reports UNB.
"Spending on education is a great investment… with this investment we'll make the nation literate…an educated nation can build a poverty-free country," she said.
The PM said this after receiving the results of Primary School Certificate (PSC) and Junior School Certificate (JSC) examinations at her official residence Ganabhaban.
About the growing number of female students that is now above their male counterparts and their good results, the PM said the number of male students will also have to be increased in educational institutions to bring the parity.
After assuming power, Hasina said, her government gradually introduced the PSC and JSC examinations in the country, aiming to build confidence among the students about public examinations.
The PM on the day formally inaugurated the free distribution of textbooks among students up to the secondary level.
She opened the textbook distribution by handing over a set of books to one student of different classes each up to secondary level under general, madrasah, and technical education boards at a simple ceremony at her official residence Ganabhaban in the morning.
She also handed over a set of books to a visually-challenged student.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman and PM's younger sister Sheikh Rehana were present.
On January 1, a number of 32,63,47,923 books will be distributed among the 4,44,52,344 students of class one to nine across the country.
The textbooks will also be distributed free among 7,03000 students of the Vocational Board.
