BNP leader Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury MP termed former Bangladeshi-origin British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury a main patron of the 1/11 changeover and questioned motives behind his scheduled arrival in Dhaka on August 3, reports UNB.
SQ Chowdhury urged the government not to allow the ex-British envoy and other patrons of the 1/11 episode to enter the country, as the politicians who were now back at the helms were subjected to worst ordeals in their political career.
"Anwar Choudhury is one of the main architects of the 1/11. His visit to Bangladesh is motivated and mysterious," the BNP leader told a press conference at his Dhanmondi residence.
He said the government must take steps so the former western diplomats, including Anwar Choudhury, who were engaged in the 1/11 episode when people and politicians were tortured, could not get into the country.
SQ Chowdhury deplored that former army chief Gen (retd) Moeen U Ahmed, Anwar Choudhury and their followers snatched away democracy and wanted to try politicians as the corrupt. "It is only the people who try politicians after every five years," he said.
The BNP lawmaker wondered when Gen (retd) Moeen was outside the country why Anwar Chowdhury was coming to Bangladesh.
Referring to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Shamsul Huda's reported meeting with Dr Kamal Hossain on the question of cancelling his parliament membership, he said they should read Article 121 of the constitution to see whether the CEC had any authority to do the same.
Asked about his plan to seek High Court's orders upon government to file case against 12 key figures of the post-1/11, 2007 caretaker government on charge of high treason, SQ Chowdhury said he was consulting his lawyers. "Those who have violated the constitution must be tried," he added.
Commenting on Awami League's new central working committee dropping "reformist" leaders, he thanked Sheikh Hasina for showing her political acumen.
SQ Chowdhury anticipated such surprise to come at BNP council too. He said, "Begum Zia is more courageous than Hasina and she would show more courage."
When asked about some reformist BNP leaders nowadays sitting in the front row at party programmes, the outspoken SQ Chowdhury likened it to a movie-house seating arrangement. "In a cinema hall viewers with low-priced tickets sit in the front rows," he said.
