Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said on Saturday that it would not be wise to remain in power for an indefinite period in the name of carrying out reforms.

He noted that the commitment of the interim government was to establish a society free from discrimination.

"So, the first and foremost priority should be to do reforms related to the election," Dr Khandaker Mosharraf said at a discussion titled 'Defending country's independence, sovereignty and no alternative to election for establishing sustainable democracy' organised by National People's Party (NPP) at the National Press Club.

He said the people of Bangladesh couldn't cast their votes during the last 17 years.

He added the looters of banks have made Sheikh Hasina an autocratic ruler.

"It came to our notice that a grave conspiracy against the country is going on. A section of people in the name of realising demands regularly come to the streets. Many believe that the interim government is weak and for this reason Sheikh Hasina sitting in India gets courage to hatch conspiracy against the country and thus India is also inciting," he said.

"People have expectations to the interim government. And at the same time they (interim government) have also commitments for carrying out reforms," he added.

"It (reforms) should be done quickly. No government could do reforms fixing date and time. You (interim government) start the reforms and the rest will be completed by the elected government," he continued.

"We have to forge unity. People of the country can do anything if they are determined. We would be able to resist the conspiracy being hatched against the country from the neighbouring country," he maintained.

Like-minded Nationalist Alliance coordinator and chairman of NPP Dr Fariduzzaman Farhad presided over the event also attended by chairman of Jatiyatabadi Gonotantrik Party SM Sahadat Hossain and comrade Noor Islam of Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal.

Meanwhile, BNP standing committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said on Saturday that India and fallen autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina have started conspiracy against Bangladesh to destroy its economy.

He said that the fanatic Indians who lowered and dishonoured Bangladeshi flag and launched attack on Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Tripura, India was against Geneva Convention.

He added that minorities in India were persecuted whereas Prime Minister Narendra Modi remained silent.

He said that India was trying to destabilise Bangladesh.

He added that Awami League started conspiracy against the government and the country which the people of the country would not accept and they will foil it.

"India gives shelter to fascist Sheikh Hasina. Attacking our Assistant High Commission means attack on Bangladesh," he said at a programme organised by Voice of Times in protest against attack on Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala, India.

The protesters at the event also condemned the attack on Bangladeshi mission in Agartala, India.

They also burned picture of West Bengal BJP leader Suvendra Adhikary for his derogatory comments against Bangladesh.

President of Voice of Times Md Farukul Islam presided over the event also attended by BNP standing committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, member of the central working council of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Advocate Helal Uddin and president of Dhaka Union of Journalists Md Shahidul Islam.

Meanwhile, at another programme, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Sunday that Bangladesh would not bow down to any pressure from other country.

"Bangladesh is an independent and sovereign country. We have achieved our independence at the cost of three million people's lives. So the country wouldn't bow down to any other country's pressure," he made the comment while talking to the media after visiting persons injured during the July-August anti-discrimination movement at the burn institute in the capital.
