Strict action against arsonists: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun warned on Friday of taking stern action if anyone tried to unleash arson attacks and resort to violence during the forthcoming 12th parliamentary selection scheduled for tomorrow.
"The consequences will be grave if anyone tries to create violence and carry out arson attacks on the polling day," the IGP told the media after a meeting on the polling day security aspects at Willes Little Flower School and College in the capital's Kakrail.
"We will take appropriate legal measures if anyone tries to deteriorate the law and order situation in the country," he said, exhorting that in an emergency situation, people could contact their nearest police station by dialling 999.
The police chief further said a group was planning and was active in carrying out arson attacks and violence.
They got information from different sources about possible arson attacks and violence on the polling day after arresting a Chhatra Dal (an associate wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party) leader in Magura district.
"We (police) have observed that they (arsonists) have made a plan to create a big sound through charging cocktails to create panic among the people and voters. I hope that no one will be able to create this type of panicky situation," he maintained.
