Business establishments and offices remain closed in Feni's Phulgazi Upazila due to a strike enforced by ruling Awami League (AL) in protest against the murder of chairman Ekramul Haque, reports bdnews24.com.
Activists of BNP's affiliated wings Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal were also seen picketing in support of the day-long strike Thursday.
On Tuesday, Ekramul was killed with attackers shooting him and setting his car on fire.
The AL's Phulgazi unit called the strike during a condolence meeting Wednesday afternoon.
Shah Alam, sub-inspector (SI) of Phulgazi thana, said additional policemen were deployed in the area to avoid untoward incident.
The strike supporters blocked roads by placing logs across the streets in several places.
They held brief rallies in different points and demanded exemplary punishment to the killers. They also raised slogans accusing district unit's general secretary Nizam Hazari of the killing.
AL Phulgazi Upazila unit leader Abdul Alim sought the prime minister's intervention to arrest the killers.
Local BNP leader Mahtab Minar was made accused in the murder case filed by the victim's brother. However, some local AL activists accused Nizam Hazari of the killing.
Meanwhile, Feni Model thana OC Mahbub Morshed said 17 out of 23 suspects arrested over the murder were released after interrogation.
The remaining six people were sent to jail. Two of them were shown arrested in murder case while the four others shown arrested on arson charges.
