Speakers at a discussion said holding elections of the student unions at the country's educational institutions, the universities in particular, is a must to create efficient leadership for the country.
Dhaka University Journalists' Association (DUJA) organised the discussion on 'democracy, leadership and development' followed by an iftar party at the TSC cafeteria of the university Tuesday.
DU Vice-Chancellor SMA Faiz, Pro-VC AFM Yusuf Haider, Social Sciences Faculty Dean Harun-ar-Rashid, National Press Club president Shawkat Mahmud, executive editor of the Ittefaq Tusharraf Ali, columnist Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq, Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dol (JCD) president Azizul Bari Helal and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) president Mahmud Hasan Ripon and DUJA president Mahbubur Rahman, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Azizul Bari Helal said holding elections of student unions at all the educational institutions, including DUCSU, is the only way to create efficient leadership for the country’s future.
Shawkat Mahmud said the nation could enjoy the outcome of this discussion after the next general elections to be held in December as per the schedule of the Election Commission.
Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq said only the positive changes in the political culture of the country can fetch recovery of democracy and create efficient leadership.
Harun-ar-Rashid said democracy, leadership and development are intricately related with one another. If any one of these three assertions is hampered, Bangladesh cannot go on a smooth way, he said further.
"Democracy creates leadership. DUCSU election is a must to create competent leadership in the country", he added.
Tusharraf Ali urged the student community to gather adequate knowledge, wisdom and capability to face the challenges of the 21st century.
He also made a clarion call to students to come forward to addressing the present crisis of the nation.
AFM Yusuf Haider said the full blossoming of democracy is indispensible for carrying out overall development of the country. Success of democracy depends on leadership, he added.
Mahbubur Rahman asked all concerned including the student organisations to contribute to making a beautiful Bangladesh in the days ahead with their concerted efforts.
