Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta, MP, Friday said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her eldest son Tarique Rahman should seek apology to the nation for their remarks, reports BSS.
"If they passed remarks out of their ignorance, they should seek apology to the nation. If they withdraw their remarks then the government would consider in one-way. Otherwise, the nation's expectation is that the matter should be disposed off through litigation," he said.
The call came when Suranjit Sengupta, a senior lawmaker of the ruling Awami League (AL), was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion in the city.
Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion on the current politics in the auditorium of the Institution of Diploma Engineers at Kakrail with its adviser Haji Md Selim, MP, in the chair. Shirin Nayeem Poonam, MP, Samyabadi Dal leader Haroon Chowdhury and Muktijoddha Projanma League president Asaduzzaman Durjoy were the discussants , among others.
Mr Sengupta said the Home Ministry should lodge cases against those who came up with derogatory remarks against Bangabandhu for retaining sanctity of the constitution.
"It can't be taken as granted that there should not be execution of the laws of the land. The remarks they made tantamount to sedition. For this, the Home Ministry should file cases. It's not the Law Ministry but the Home Ministry should file cases bringing charge of sedition. If it is applicable under the Criminal Procedure Act then the Law Ministry can settle the matter issuing a circular," the senior parliamentarian added.
"They have been giving statements one after another for distorting the history. He (Tarique Rahman) first claimed that his father was the proclaimer of independence and then he remarked that Bangabandhu was the illegal prime minister. Apparently it could be taken as the audacity of a half-educated young man. Someone termed it as his arrogance. If it could not be nipped in the bud now, its stems and branches would spread in course of time," the senior AL leader said.
