Asian Legal Resource Centre (ALRC) urged the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Wednesday to take steps to protect people's lives, liberties and livelihood.
"The Council should create a country mandate to report back to the UN for taking further necessary steps, as required, for the protection of the lives, liberties and livelihood of the people," said the ALRC, an independent regional NGO, in a letter to the UNHRC.
ALRC, a Hong Kong-based sister organisation of the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), holds general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
"The Council should ascertain authentic information about the ground reality and the international community should intervene in Bangladesh before more lives and voices are lost," said the body as posted on its website.
Mentioning the government's 'clampdown' on such fundamental freedoms, it said, "As a member of UNHRC, Bangladesh is undermining universal human rights at home against its own people and is pretending to be a promoter of rights at international forums such as the Council."
The ALRC referred to a number of 'arbitrarily' actions of the government shutting down some newspapers, TV channels and arresting journalists including editor and chairman of media house.
