BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has stressed the importance of BNP's reform to modernise the party, saying it was Tarique Zia who first launched the movement for its reform, although many now talk about reform, reports UNB.
"It was BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman who first launched the movement for its reform," Khaleda said in a teleconference with leaders and workers of BNP's New York unit Thursday.
She said Tarique had toured the country's villages, held grassroots-level conferences and stood beside the people during their distress and need.
Khaleda said Tarique also had contributions towards establishing various welfare organisations, including Asthma Care and Prevention Centre, Kamal Seed Project, Plastic Surgery Camp, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Shishu Hospital, Kamal Water Project and flood and agriculture rehabilitation centres.
"But, there have been negative campaigns against him (Tarique), although he did a lot of work for people. Shaheed Zia and I had worked selflessly for the country and its people. Tarique, as our son, also tried to do the same and he didn't cause harm to the country," the BNP chief said.
The BNP chairperson alleged that their political rivals and vested quarters have long been engaged in a pernicious campaign against Tarique.
The BNP chief thanked those who are active both at home and abroad for the release of Tarique.
Referring to various conspiracies against BNP and nationalist forces on various occasions, she told her party leaders and workers, "We had faced odds in the past too. So there should not be any more mistake."
