Teachers in all government colleges in Chittagong have begun their two-day abstention from work protesting the discrimination in the new pay scale and abolition of time scale and selection-grade, reports bdnews24.com.
No classes and tests at 20 colleges in the district were held after their demonstrations started Saturday morning.
BCS General Education Association had announced the programme after the government approved the Eighth National Pay Scale on Sep 7.
Public university teachers had also been agitating against the new pay scale, in which the basic pay ranges between Tk 8,250 and Tk 78,000.
Apart from abstaining from work, the teachers of the colleges in Chittagong also held rallies on Saturday.
Rallies were held at the city's Chittagong College, Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College, Government Commerce College, City College and Nasirabad College as well as in other colleges across the district.
Demonstrations by teachers were also reported from Cox's Bazar and the three Chittagong Hill Tracts districts.
"The new pay scale has hiked salaries, but it has put teachers in a lower grade.
"The National University had to postpone exams due to our protests. We hope that the government will accept our demand," said Mohsin College's chemistry teacher Md Idris Ali.
Professors, assistant professors and associate professors will be paid under the same grade in the new pay scale, Comilla Shahid Nazrul College Vice-Principal Shah Md Alamgir told bdnews24.com at the rally in Nasirabad College.
