Testimony from witnesses in the crimes against humanity case filed against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two others is in its final stage.
The other two individuals involved are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
On Monday, Editor of the Daily Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman testified before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) in Dhaka as the 46th witness in the case.
This phase of the trial is expected to conclude with the testimony of National Citizens Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam and another witness, confirmed ICT Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam. Arguments in the case will start shortly after the completion of testimonies, he said.
Stating that only a few testimonies remain, Tajul Islam said, "Nahid Islam is scheduled to testify tomorrow (Tuesday). Along with his testimony, we have one more formal witness remaining. We hope that with their testimonies, testimony in this case will be completed." In his statement, Mahmudur Rahman said that BAKSAL (Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League), the sole legal ruling party of Bangladesh formed in 1975 by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was the first authoritarian regime in the history of Bangladesh. He claimed that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman harbored hatred toward the army, and for this reason, he formed the "Rakkhi Bahini" as an alternative force to the military.
Amar Desh Editor said, "Hasina also continued the family's tradition of hostility toward the army and sought to break the backbone of the military. The 15 years following the BDR carnage in 2009 have shown that Sheikh Hasina was largely successful in her plan to weaken the army."
"In order to prolong her fascist regime, Hasina focused on controlling the judiciary after bringing the army under her control. She then focused on suppressing political opponents after establishing political influence over the army and the judiciary.
To this end, they first targeted pro-Islamic political parties. As part of the plan, they created a mob culture at Shahbagh in Dhaka under the banner of Gonojagoron Moncho… After then, three election dramas were staged in the country. The first one was staged in 2014, the second one in 2018, and the third one in 2024," said Mr. Mahmudur Rahman.
