Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader has questioned the loyalty of those who do not observe the historic Mujibnagar Day on April 17, describing them as chameleons, report agencies.
Marking the Mujibnagar Day, the senior AL leader, flanked by other party members, placed a wreath at the mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Dhanmondi-32 road in the city on Sunday.
AL presidium members Matia Chowdhury and Dr Abdur Razzaque, organising secretaries Ahmad Hossain and Mirza Azam, liberation war affairs secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, cultural secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, central committee member Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem were, among others, present on the occasion.
Quader also discouraged debate over settled historical issues.
"It was Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who led the freedom fighters to victory in 1971. The four national leaders' dedication and organising capacity were crucial to that glorious achievement," he said.
"Those who do not observe March 7, April 17 and June 7, are not true freedom fighters, I call them chameleons who are disguised as freedom fighters," he said.
"Instead of arguing over settled historical issues, we should pledge to strengthen our secular spirit to achieve victory under Sheikh Hasina's leadership." The AL leader stressed the need for strengthening the country's non-communal sprit under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
"By strengthening the non-communal spirit, today's pledge is to consolidate the victory under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu (Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman)."
