Three BNP leaders among four sued for extortion in Bagerhat

BAGERHAT, July 15 (UNB): A case was filed against three local BNP leaders and one office assistant of district collectorate office on charge of extortion.
Police sources said district Mahila Dal convenor Toufika Kamal filed the case with the Sadar thana Saturday against them.
The accused are district BNP Vice-president Ali Reza Babu, organising secretary and former upazila chairman Sheikh Nazrul Islam and district Sramik Dal president and Poura commissioner Sarder Liakat Ali and district collectorate office assistant Shamsur Rahman.
In her complaint Toufika Kamal alleged that the accused demanded a toll of Tk 0.3 million (3.0 lakh) from her on December 1 in 2003 at her Nager Bazar's residence in the town.
As per their demand and life threat Toufika said she was forced to give them Tk 0.1 million (one lakh).
She said after some days the accused mounted pressure on her for the rest Tk 0.2 million (2.0 lakh) and at one stage ransacked her business establishment and damaged valuables worth about Tk 0.5 million (5.0 lakh).
Ali Reza Babu and Sheikh Nazrul Islam are at present in jail in another extortion case.
