Three senior NCP leaders in Nilphamari have joined the Jamaat-e-Islami, reports bdnews24.com .

On Friday morning, Al Faruq Abdul Latif, member of parliament for Nilphamari-2 and assistant secretary of the district Jamaat, officially welcomed them with flowers at a ceremony in the district town.

The defecting leaders are NCP district unit Joint Convenor Khoyrat Hossain Shah and Joint Member Secretaries Md Shah Alam Chowdhury and Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

Speaking to the news agency, Jahangir cited systemic corruption within the NCP's district high command as the primary reason for their resignation.

"The heads of the NCP committee in Nilphamari are involved in irregularities and corruption across the board.

"As a well-known figure in the district, I could not remain associated with such practices," he said.

When pressed for specifics, he alleged that the NCP top brass had been collecting money in exchange for securing various appointments and had even extracted funds from new members joining the party.

The defection has sparked debates across the district, primarily because the NCP and Jamaat are strategic allies, having contested in the general election as part of the same coalition. Despite the alliance, local Jamaat activists believe the inclusion of these influential figures will have a positive impact on their organisational strength in the region.

Abdul Latif confirmed the joining, saying: "Three NCP leaders have joined Jamaat-e-Islami, and we have welcomed them into our fold."

Kamrul Islam Darpan, member secretary of the NCP Nilphamari district convening committee, said: "I am not yet aware of this development."

Meanwhile, Four leaders of the National Citizens Party (NCP), including the convener of Chapainawabganj district unit, Md Alaul Haque, have resigned from their positions.

On Thursday, they submitted their resignation letters to the party's central convener Nahid Islam. A copy of the resignation letters was also sent to local media outlets, including Chapainawabganj Press Club.

The other resigning leaders are: NCP district senior joint secretary Nazmul Huda Khan Rubel, joint convener Sheikh Oliul Islam Kafi, and joint secretary Syed Kibria.

In separate letters, they cited personal reasons for stepping down from all party responsibilities. Md. Alaul Haque told reporters that due to family and personal issues, he could not perform his duties effectively, which prompted his resignation.
