Tk 2.067b project for updating voter list with photographs

A Tk 2.067 billion (206.70 crore) project was signed Tuesday to provide adequate infrastructure at upazila, district and divisional levels for regular maintenance and updating of the voter list with photographs, reports UNB.
The governments of Bangladesh and the Netherlands and the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) will jointly finance the project titled 'Construction of Upazila and Regional Server Stations for Electoral Databases (CSSED)'
Of the total cost, the two development partners will provide Tk 961 million (96.10 crore) while the government will provide the remaining Tk 1.106 billion (110.60 crore) to implement the project to be completed by October 2010.
An agreement to this effect was signed by the Netherlands government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in presence of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda at the Election Commission Secretariat Tuesday.
Netherlands Ambassador Bea ten Tusscher and UNDP Country Director Stefan Priesner signed the agreement for their respective sides. Election commissioners M Sohul Hussain and Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain were also present.
Under the project, some 502 permanent database centres will be set up in 481 upazilas, 16 thanas and five regional centres at the divisional level.
Talking to the reporters, CEC Dr Shamsul Huda informed that the construction work in all 481 upazilas and in urban areas would simultaneously start in the middle of April.
He said the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) would implement the construction respectively in urban and rural areas.
