World Health Organisation (WHO) said tobacco kills nearly six million people each year globally and the number would be over eight million annually by 2030, if proper initiative is not taken right now, reports BSS.
In a statement on the eve of the World Tobacco Day, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia Region, said more than 80 per cent of the preventable deaths would occur in low and middle-income countries.
Mentioning the countries constant initiative of curbing tobacco consumption, he said: "Tax and price policies are widely recognised as most effective for reducing demand for and consumption of tobacco products, and the measures together with strong pictorial warnings have brought substantial health care gains."
