State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advocate Qamrul Islam Saturday said trials of some listed war criminals will be completed within a few months, reports BSS.
Rejecting any confusion about holding of trial of war criminals, he said all war criminals would be brought to book in phases.
Qamrul was addressing a discussion titled 'Trial of War Criminals: the Conspiracy of BNP-Jama'at Alliance' organised by Janotar Protyasha, a social organisation, at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) in the city on the occasion of the Historic Mujibnagar Day.
Former Home Minister Mohammad Nasim, International Relations Secretary of Mohila Awami League and Assistant Attorney General Nurjahan Begum Mukta and leaders of different front organisations of Bangladesh Awami League, among others, addressed the discussion with convenor of Janotar Protyasha MA Karim in the chair.
The government is taking time to complete the trial process to make it standard and flawless, Qamrul said adding, "We are following all procedures and collecting necessary evidence and documents properly for maintaining the international standard."
But the BNP Chairperson has raised question about neutrality of the International Crimes' Tribunal without showing specific reasons, which means BNP does not want trial of war criminals, the state minister added.
Qamrul blamed BNP for assisting Fazlul Haque Amini to create unstable situation in the country for foiling the trial process of war criminals.
He urged the countrymen to be united again like '71 to continue fight against the anti-liberation forces as they are still conspiring to destroy the spirit of War of Liberation.
In his address, Nasim urged the government to declare the Historic Mujibnagar Day as a public holiday and to take steps to let the people know the importance of the day.
