Trial proceedings against BNP leader Aslam Chy to continue: HC

The High Court on Sunday cleared the way for continuing the trial proceedings of a case filed against BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury on charge of embezzling Tk 3.25 billion after receiving a loan from the AB Bank.
The High Court summarily rejected a petition filed by Aslam Chowdhury seeking cancellation of the case filed against him.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order after hearing the petition.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared in the court hearing on behalf of Aslam Chowdhury, while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on July 17, 2016 for embezzling Tk 3.25 billion after receiving loan from AB Bank's Agrabad branch in Chattogram in several phases during 2011-13.
The loans were taken under the name of Aslam's family company Rising Steel Limited to buy scrap ships. But he did not repay the loans. Charges in the case were pressed on August 7, 2017.
