Tributes paid to Pilkhana martyrs

The nation mourned Wednesday the deaths of 74 people including 57 army officers who lost their lives while serving the then BDR now Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seven years ago in the February 25-26 Pilkhana carnage in 2009, report agencies.
Representatives of the President and the Prime Minister, State Minister for Home Affairs, chiefs of three services, senior home secretary and BGB director general paid rich tributes by placing floral wreaths at the Military Graveyard in Banani in the morning.
Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman and former army chief, HM Ershad, and near and dear ones of the assassinated army personnel and a delegation of BNP also paid tributes to the martyrs by placing floral wreaths.
Bangladesh Army arran-ged the programme.
After paying rich tributes, relatives of the martyrs and BGB chief Major General Aziz Ahmed demanded immediate execution of the death penalties.
An elaborate programme has been taken by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) during the carnage, marking the sixth anniversary of the BDR carnage.
The day-long mourning programme began with Khatme Quran at all the BGB mosques after Fazr prayers Wednesday. Milad and doa mahfils were also held at Pilkhana and all units of the frontier force for eternal peace of the departed souls.
The BNP delegation led by Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman placed wreaths at their graves at Banani graveyard around 11:00 am, marking the 6th anniversary of the Pilkhana tragedy.
While talking to reporters, Mahbubur Rahman demanded of the government to conduct a fair investigation into the heinous incident so that innocent people are not punished.
He also urged the government to make the trial process transparent.
A total of 74 people, including 57 army officials, were killed in Pilkhana massacre during February 25-26 in 2009. Two cases were filed with Lalbagh thana in connection with the horrendous incident.
