Udichi tragedy day today

Jessore Udichi Tragedy Day will be observed today in Jessore. On March 7, 1999 ten people were killed and at least 200 others injured in two separate bomb explosions at the cultural function of the 12th national conference at around 1am at Munshi Meherullah Maidan in Jessore.
After the incident people of all walks of lives demanded exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of the carnage. Several protest programmes were held in the town at that time. A case was lodged with Jessore Kotwali police station without naming the miscreants. The case was handed over to the Criminals Investigation Department (CID) later to enquire into the matter. After long investigation the CID submitted a charge sheet accusing former minister and also vice-president of BNP Tariqul Islam and the then municipal commissioner Nur-Un-Nabi and some others to a Jessore court. Later, a special and district judge, Jessore in a verdict acquitted all the accused as the CID was unable to produce evidence against the charge sheeted accused.
To mark the day Udichi Shilpi Gosthi and other cultural organisations chalked out several programmes including candle procession, discussion and cultural function.
