Unregistered mobile phones seized in city

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and BTRC officials during a drive have seized 255 sets of unregistered mobile phones of different brands from Pallabi in the city's Mirpur area on Friday.

The RAB also detained five persons in connection with the case/ matter.

The detainees are Md Shahabuddin Ahmed (26), Md Omar Faruk (40), Md Abdul Aziz (24), Md Kawsarul Haque (27) and Md Faisal Haque (36).

Assistant Director (Media officer) and also Assistant Police Superintendent of RAB-4 Md Mazharul Islam told the media about mobile seizures and arrests.

He said that acting on a tip off they (RAB) along with officials of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) had carried out the drive in the Pallabi area against selling of unregistered mobile phones.

He said that during the raid they had seized 255 unregistered mobile phones and arrested five persons in this connection.

The RAB official further said that the BTRC officials by using their own software and server had examined and confirmed those confiscated mobile sets were imported illegally (without paying government VAT and duties) in the country.

He said the detained persons have confessed to smuggling mobile phones into the country over the last few years.
