UP chairman, member sentenced to 16 years in Patuakhali

PATUAKHALI, July 4 (UNB): A court here Wednesday sentenced a union parishad (UP) chairman and a former UP member each to 16 years of rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case, filed 15 years ago.
The court also fined Chairman of Chhoto Bighai union in Sadar Upazila M Mizanur Rahman Sikdar and former UP member Sohrab Hossain Tk 10,000 each.
In case of failure to pay the fine, they will have to serve one year more in jail.
Both the convicts were present in the dock during the judgement.
According to the prosecution, the government had allocated 274.53 tonnes of wheat for digging Manik Kerani canal in 1992. Mizanur Rahman, who was also the then UP chairman, lifted 37.930 tonnes of wheat but did not implement the scheme.
